Diva Dirt presents its sixth annual Writers’ Choice Awards, as decided by the Diva Dirt team. As we come to the end of 2016, we have picked the best of the best to be awarded our Writers’ Choice trophies.
Luchadora of the Year: Sexy Star
There’s no other luchadora in Lucha Underground who embodies a pure baby face like Sexy Star. This is why she has undoubtedly earned the honor of being the inaugural Luchadora of the Year.

Sexy Star came to the Temple as a beacon of light. A domestic violence survivor, she would fight to prove that women can be equal to men. Her goal became clear throughout her trials and tribulations, give a voice to the voiceless.
In her quest, she would face many adversaries and wasn’t afraid to take them head on.
She would lead the charge with other “good guys” in the Temple against a ruthless group of aggressors who engaged in back room deals with Temple Proprietor Dario Cueto.
After this match she’d ask Dario to take on The Crew. Tired of always being “saved” by others in the Temple, she’d ask to fight alone.
Though she would be overpowered by Big Ryck, she didn’t stay down for long. She kept competing in the Temple and she would then feud with Pentagon Jr while he was on his rampage of collecting broken arms for his master. They’d take their feud to the next level in a Submission Match. She’d become one of few competitors to escape his grasp.
She would be betrayed by other luchadors she thought she could trust after participating in a Mask vs Mask match. Later on she would pick up an Aztec Medallion that guaranteed her a match with six other luchadors for a shot at the Gift of the Gods Championship. But, the title would elude her and by the end of Season One she would be captured by newcomer Marty “The Moth” Martinez.
When Season Two would return Sexy would escape her tormentors and gain a new ally in The Mack. However, she was a much more broken woman. She would instantly fold if Marty was around and when he introduced his sister Mariposa, she was struck with palpable fear. She vowed to overcome the terror and prepared to face the crafty Butterfly in the first ever No Mas Match.
Both women would fight with fire and the match would become brutal and incredibly violent, further putting the women on the map and showing them that they are equal to the men in the Temple.
Sexy refused to quit and her rivalry with Mariposa would end, for now.
She would move on to become the first woman to hold the Gift of the Gods Championship at Ultima Lucha Dos, defeating Daga, El Siniestro de la Muerte, Killshot, Mariposa, Marty Martinez, and Nightclaw.
From there she would become the first to successfully defend and retain the Gift of the Gods Championship.Worldwide Underground and Johnny Mundo would set their sights on her as Johnny’s ego continued to swell.
She’d fall at the hands of Johnny but would seal her place in the history books again and smash the glass ceiling by ultimately winning the Lucha Underground Championship at Aztec Warfare III.
In a victory speech she thanks the crowd for their support and says she’ll give her life to prove that women are just as strong as men.
She would also go on to dedicate her victory to all women and vows to will continue to fight for the empowerment of women, as “every woman is sexy, every woman is a star!”

She’d lose the title against her rival Johnny again but the two would meet in a steel cage for a rematch. She became the first woman to participate in a match with such a stipulation!
Again, Johnny would cheat to retain the title but Sexy remains undeterred.

Never give up, never surrender and that’s why Sexy Star is the Luchadora of the Year! It remains to be seen what 2017 will bring as Sexy has reduced her role in the squared circle. However, her journey has come full circle, representing what an indomitable spirit that stays determined no matter what can do, and that’s inspirational. Her character has immense depth and her storytelling abilities raise the bar on what it means to be an underdog. Sexy Star we salute you!
