What’s up Diva fans and welcome to this week’s WWE Superstars Redux! It’s me Jack here and I’m excited to share this little golden nugget with you this week as the match was quite enjoyable, and like the Superstars match featuring the Funkadactyls and the Bellas, this one definitely has Total Divas repercussions. This week, we were treated to Divas tag team action which saw the aforementioned Funkadactyls, Cameron and Naomi take on the veteran team of Layla and Natalya. Planet Funk’s finest will be looking to get an upset win yet Natalya practically lived in a dungeon for several years, so she definitely won’t go down without a fierce fight. Before your minds boggle to the point of explosion, let’s get this show on the road!
Out first this week are the Funkadactyls and well done to Justin Roberts, who must be the only announcer to correctly state where Caomi are from – Planet Funk! It’s actually a country that borders the Bottomless Pit and Parts Unknown in the continent of Gimmickistan. Just call me Jack McCool as you all just got a fantastic Geography lesson! By the way, both Cameron and Naomi look absolutely stunning! Out next is the Little English Muffin herself, Layla! It will be sad to never hear Matt Striker refer to Layla as that anymore as he has since left the company and this was the last match he called. LEAVE THE MEMORIES ALONE! Remember when Matt Striker nearly won Kurt Angle’s gold medal that one time and when he managed Big Daddy V for a lukewarm hot minute? Those were the days… Now that the tumbleweed has blown across your screens, you’ll see that Natalya’s powerful pink entrance is in your eye-line and what a majestic sight it is.
The match starts with Layla and Naomi locking up as Tony Dawson butchers a storyline explanation about a confrontation backstage between Cameron and Layla. You’ll see later in the match that I think he meant to say Natalya but nevertheless, there is my weekly nitpick of Tony’s work. Both girls shift momentum in the form of some nice chain wrestling, with both girls jockeying for position by applying moves to the head and arms of one another. After having a good cinch on Naomi’s neck with a headlock, Layla s bounced off the ropes by her funky foe yet she is undeterred and hits a shoulder tackle. She traverses off the ropes once more and Naomi dodges several proverbial bullets by leapfrogging and split-frogging (I think I just made that work up?) before being rolled-up by Layla’s Infinity pin combination. Naomi kicks out at 2 and reverses the pin into a crucifix style cover of her own, which also gets 2.
Naomi then runs at Layla and falls victim to a drop toe hold and then an almighty spank to her behind. Naomi looks fuming at Layla prances around before ramming her own buttocks into Naomi’s face. Naomi definitely believes in ‘anything you can do, I can do better’ as she then wallops Layla with her Rear View. Once again, the Divas are using their ASSets to their advantage! Naomi gets a two count before tagging in her feisty partner-in-crime Cameron. The dancing duo whip Layla off the ropes before Naomi levels her with a clothesline and Cameron bounces on her with a flip senton. Cameron goes for a cover and she gets a near fall yet she isn’t in control for long, as Layla punches her in the stomach, kicks her in the chest and then drags her to her corner so that she can tag in Natalya.
Nattie immediately goes for a cover in the form of a schoolgirl yet after that only gets her a one count, she is lightning quick to get back on Cameron and she applies a front facelock. Cameron reverses this and wrenches in a wristlock yet Tal channels her inner Sweet Brown and she ain’t got time for that! She rolls and flips her way out of the predicament before executing an armbar of her own on Cam Cam. The Dungeon Diva then calls Cameron a mutt and I’m not sure if that is more offensive of an insult than ‘hoochie mamma’!
A series of back and forth holds follow Nattie’s insult and the action is very quick and very even. Cameron jumps over Natalya in the corner and then delivers an almighty slap before getting jiggy with it. Natalya has perfected her slapping technique over the years, especially in matches with Alicia Fox, and she bludgeons (excuse my drama, I’m running out of synonyms) Cameron with a thunderous one! Cameron then Lou Theszs Nattie and all hell breaks loose. In the classic words of Joey Styles…. CATFIGHT! Naomi and Layla return to the ring to try and seperate an irate Cameron and serious Natalya – the ref definitely has his hands full!
Referee Rod Zapata (holy surname, that’s unusual) orders Cameron and Natalya to shake hands at once and they oblige, yet Cameron makes sure she has the last laugh with Natalya. As Nattie tags in Layla, Cameron shoves Natalya right into her partner. Layla rushes into the ring and also she momentarily is kicked down, she ducks a clothesline attempt from Cameron and then nails her with the Bombshell! Naomi is too late to make the save and this one is over!
Thoughts: I REALLY, REALLY enjoyed this. I often like face vs face matches as they are always so even, with each side going toe-to-toe every step of the way and this was no exception. The heat was then turned up big time when Cameron slapped the taste out of Nattie’s mouth, and hopefully it slapped her love for the Great Khali out as well! We can only hope…
As for Cameron, I am such a big fan of her right now. In terms of in-ring skills, Naomi will always be #1 in their tag team yet in terms of character, Cameron is, in my opinion, 100% more charismatic than Naomi. Both have been given very little to work with in terms of character development as all they do is dance, yet every time Cameron is in the ring, she brings sass and feistyness that sets her apart from the other Divas. Going with the mutt nickname Natalya gave her, you could say she is the Scrappy Doo of the Divas division, and I mean that as the biggest compliment. She is small yet it’s not about the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. Keep up the good work Cameron – I can’t wait for you to eventually turn on Naomi when she wins the Divas Title and go PHierce on that fantastic booty of hers! Ok, I think I’m getting a little carried away!
As for Naomi and Layla, we didn’t get too see as much of them in this match yet both performed solidly. Naomi is perfectly fine just being athletic as hell right now and I’m sure that after AJ has wrapped things up with Kaitlyn, Naomi will be next in line. Then my dream storyline mentioned above can happen; here’s hoping! And with that, stay tuned, Jack will be back!
