As we approach the end to Women’s History Month, WWE certainly has failed to put any effort into their women’s division. With the biggest event of the year WrestleMania just around the corner, that makes it even more disheartening. Other than providing random praise of their female talent on social media throughout the month, the company has entirely missed the entire build towards the The Show of Shows.
WWE has seemingly had some hurdles to jump over when it comes to the booking of the women for the red brand. However, with the talent pool there is no excuse not to be able to salvage some great women’s matches for WrestleMania. With the show being less than two week’s away, tonight’s RAW was another missed opportunity.
Heading into RAW we knew already that Rhea Ripley had challenged Asuka for the RAW Women’s Title. Asuka accepted but the two had a contract signing advertised for this week’s show. Speculations led to Charlotte Flair possibly being added to the match during this segment. Instead, WWE does the same thing they have been doing for months. Enter the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions.
At no fault of their own, Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax are yet again thrown into competition surrounding a singles champion. For the past two months they have been battling SmackDown Women’s Champion Sasha Banks and her WrestleMania challenger Bianca Belair. Now, thanks to the complete lack of creativity, the tag champs interrupted the contract signing to challenge Asuka and Ripley next week. Ripley accepted for the both of them as she took out Asuka just moments before.
What makes next week’s match announcement even more ridiculous is just prior to this happening, Shayna Baszler was defeated by Naomi in a singles match. Yes, Naomi pinned the champion. During that match, Naomi had her tag team partner Lana with her at ringside. Another tag team, Mandy Rose and Dana Brooke were on commentary. The teams ended up fighting during the match but somehow we still do not have a tag team match announced for WrestleMania.
On the SmackDown side of things we have The Riott Squad who hasn’t been seen since last month and Tamina & Natalya who keep saying they want a title shot. Yet instead what does WWE do….gives the fans Baszler & Jax vs. Ripley & Asuka. I can only imagine this is as frustrating for the talent as it is for us fans to watch.
With WrestleMania 37 being a two-night event there is no reason why the women can’t have at the VERY least two matches per night. We are now sitting at two total – one on each night. Of course they could always add a tag title match for the event still and hopefully they will.
Dear WWE – please stop booking the tag division with the singles division in order to minimize the amount of content we would like to see. Do better.
