Your Two Cents: Do Long Title Reigns Help or Hurt?

“Your Two Cents” is our interactive feature where we gauge the opinions of our Twitter and Facebook followers on different discussions in women’s wrestling.

This week, we’re asking this: Gail Kim has made history in holding the Knockouts Title for over 200 days. We want to know: do you think long title reigns strengthen or weaken a division? We’ve read your responses on our social media pages and picked some of the best submissions to highlight here on the website. As always, you can join the debate by leaving your comments!

Our Two Cents

Batting for Team DD this week, it’s Steven giving us his personal opinion on this week’s topic:

Steven: In a time where the concept of championship ‘hot potato’ is commonplace, a champion having a lengthy title reign can only benefit a division. While many fans see a triple digit reign of a champion as stale or boring, as long as the company is doing their part by providing fresh and new storylines, as well as new challengers for the champion in question, I don’t see the problem with a longer than average reign. It’s when the title jumps from person to person with no rhyme or reason, that the division suffers.

Your Two Cents

Caylon Knox | I don’t mind a good 4 or 5 month reign, but after that it gets old. You could do that back in the day, but nobody has wanted to see lengthy title reigns since the 90s.
Corey Flynn | It depends who the person is and how long they’ve held the titles. Gail’s reign has strenghened AND weakened it because before Gail got the title, it kept quickly changing hands since August. It went from Mickie James to Winter to Mickie to Winter to Velvet Sky to Gail in just 3 months. But after Gail kept defeating Knockout after Knockout after Knockout everytime the title was on the line, it has weakened the division because I thought her getting victories over Mickie, Tara & Madison Rayne meant Velvet was getting the title back after her first title reign was so short and then I thought they were gonna shock us by giving Brooke Tessmacher a title reign, but neither of them got the belt. Now her title reign is boring and we don’t know who TNA is gonna give a title shot to next. Will it be Angelina Love? Mickie? Velvet? Brooke? Tara? Someone else?
Eric Lecuyer | I believe that it strengths the individual that holds the title, but weakens the division as a whole, especially when the whole division has challenged the champion and came up short.
Josue Guzman | Like any sport, championships and title reigns are meant to bring interest and prestige. While companies like WWE and TNA may book their champions, it doesn’t mean that the individuals holding the title aren’t worthy or talented. That being said, I do believe long title reigns, with the right booking and creativity, overall help a division.

A perfect example would be Beth Phoenix‘s 200+ day title reign where she took on the likes of Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly and Tamina. Not only did it allow Beth to show case her talent and athleticism but it also gave the rest of the girls an opportunity to get some screen time, face/heel turns and a chance to display any new improvements that may have picked up.

@Miss_Diesel | Weaken the division, especially since with this long title reign there is no hot feud for the title at all, seems like once the title reign is gotten into the holder is being built up as a undefeatable person when in fact there is someone that can beat them.
Shawn Robinson | I think long title reigns strengthen a division. If a belt changes hands too often it gives the impression that it isn’t something you would put your all in to acquiring or keeping.
Steve Tilker | I’m of two minds on this one. As it relates to Gail Kim, I think it’s great that her current reign is setting a record. Like Bobby Roode, it implies that the company is backing their standard bearer. With that said, I don’t think Gregory Helms is the greatest Cruiseweight champion of all time simply because his year-long run was at a time WWE gave up on the division. Time and booking will tell if Gail’s run is like Roode or Helms. Good question.
@TriDevilDiva | Totally strengthens it. Especially for female wrestlers. Gives the title more allure and credibility.

And now we turn it over to you…
